All Might turns into a villain in the latest My Hero Academia movie

My Hero Academia movie

The official website for the anime adaptation of Kohei Horikoshi's manga "Boku no Hero Academia (My Hero Academia)" has unveiled a new promotional video for the franchise's fourth original movie. Titled "Boku no Hero Academia: The Movie – You Are Next," the film is set to premiere on August 2 in Japanese theaters.

This movie will showcase a completely original (non-canonical) story crafted by the author Kohei Horikoshi, who is also overseeing the project and handling character designs. The narrative will unfold within the same timeline as the seventh season of the anime, scheduled to debut on May 4 in Japan.

The press release reveals:

In a society ravaged by conflicts between heroes and enemies (villains) and plagued by Datsugoku, individuals who have escaped from enemy incarceration facilities, a profound incident occurs just before the ultimate confrontation between heroes, including the protagonist Izuku Midoriya (Deku), and their adversaries, causing a seismic impact on the world. The question arises: What is the significance of the title "You Are Next"?

The second teaser visual, already unveiled, presents a colossal golden statue of All Might positioned at the center. Accompanied by the rallying cry "Challenge the Symbol of Peace," the image features members of Class 1A Heroes from UA Academy – Deku, Katsuki Bakugou, Shoto Todoroki, Ochako Uraraka, and Tenya Iida – along with a figure bearing an uncanny resemblance to All Might, standing restlessly beyond their gaze. What challenges will Deku and his companions confront in this movie? The visual effects are brimming with dynamism.

On the other hand, Horikoshi commenced the serialization of the manga "Boku no Hero Academia" in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in July 2014 and embarked on its concluding story arc in March 2021. The anime adaptation, produced by BONES studios, has been consistently running since April 2016, giving rise to a total of six seasons to date, and a seventh season is already in production.

Production Team

  • Tensai Okamura (Nanatsu no Taizai, Ao no Exorcist, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Soul Eater) takes on the directorial role for the feature film at Bones studios.
  • Yousuke Kuroda (Goblin Slayer, High School of the Dead, BTOOOM!, MASHLE) is responsible for scriptwriting and script supervision.
  • Yoshihiko Umakoshi (High School of the Dead, Mushishi, Berserk) oversees character design and animation direction.
  • Yuuki Hayashi (Haikyuu!!, Death Parade, Blood Lad, Kiznaiver) is in charge of composing the soundtrack.

Synopsis of My Hero Academia

The emergence of "Quirks," recently discovered superpowers, has steadily increased over the years, with 80 percent of humanity possessing various abilities, ranging from elemental manipulation to shape-shifting. This leaves the rest of the world completely powerless, and Izuku Midoriya is among those individuals. Since childhood, the ambitious high school student has harbored a singular desire – to become a hero. Despite the unfair hand dealt to Izuku by fate, he admires heroes and diligently takes notes on them whenever possible. His persistence bears fruit when Izuku encounters the number one hero and his personal idol, All Might. All Might's Quirk is a unique ability that can be inherited, and he has chosen Izuku as his successor!

After enduring months of grueling training, Izuku enrolls at UA Academy, a prestigious high school renowned for its excellent hero training program. This year's first-year students show exceptional promise. Alongside his peculiar yet talented classmates and facing the imminent threat of an evil organization, Izuku is about to discover the genuine essence of being a hero.
