The Boy and the Heron Among Ghibli's Oscar-Nominated Masterpieces

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, responsible for the Oscars, has unveiled the nominees for the 96th Academy Awards. Hayao Miyazaki's film "Kimitachi wa Dou Ikiru ka (The Boy and the Heron)" from Studio Ghibli has secured a nomination in the Best Animated Feature Film category. Expectations run high, as this could mark the second film to clinch the award, following "Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (Spirited Away)" (directed by Hayao Miyazaki), which secured the Best Animated Feature Film accolade in 2003.

Its contenders include "Elemental," "Nimona," "Robot Dreams," and "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse."

This marks the first time a film directed by Hayao Miyazaki has been nominated for the Best Animated Feature Film award since "Kaze Tachinu (The Wind Rises)" at the 86th edition in 2014. Within Studio Ghibli's repertoire, the 87th edition in 2015 showcased "Kaguya-hime no Monogatari (The Tale of the Princess Kaguya)," the 88th in 2016 presented "Omoide no Marnie (When Marnie Was There)," and the 89th in 2017 featured "The Red Turtle (La Tortue Rogue)" (co-produced with France and Belgium), which also received a nomination for Best Animated Feature Film.

"Kimitachi wa Dou Ikiru ka (The Boy and the Heron)" has already achieved the distinction of being the first Japanese film to win the Best Animated Feature Film award at the 81st Golden Globe Awards, as announced earlier this month. Following its release in Japan last July, it made appearances at film festivals abroad before its global premiere.

The English cast, including Christian Bale, Dave Bautista, Gemma Chan, Willem Dafoe, Karen Fukuhara, Mark Hamill, Robert Pattinson, and Florence Pugh, has sparked considerable interest. The film premiered in New York on November 22, with advance screenings commencing in four theaters in Los Angeles, setting a record for the highest average box office revenue for a Hayao Miyazaki film in the United States.

After its release in 2,205 theaters across the United States and Canada starting on December 8, the film's box office earnings in the first three days (December 8 to 10) marked a historic moment as the first original Japanese film to claim the top spot in the North American weekend box office. It achieved significant recognition, winning the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Animated Film on December 1, followed by the Los Angeles Film Critics Circle Award for Best Animation and the Boston Film Critics Circle Award for Best Animated Film on December 10, further amplifying its acclaim.

Building on its success at the Golden Globe Awards, where it emerged victorious, the film secured another milestone by becoming the first Japanese film to be nominated for Best Animated Film at the 77th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA), as announced on the 18th of this month. Additionally, it garnered nominations in seven categories at the 51st Annie Awards, widely recognized as "the Oscars of the animation world," including a nomination for Best Picture. The much-anticipated 96th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for March 10 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, United States, and we eagerly await the outcome!
