Synopsis of Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari

The Four Heroes, ordinary men from modern Japan, are summoned to the kingdom of Melromarc to become its saviors. Melromarc is a land ravaged by the Waves of Calamity, which have relentlessly devastated the region and brought centuries of disasters to its inhabitants. Each of the four heroes is bestowed with a weapon—sword, spear, bow, and shield—to confront these calamitous waves. Naofumi Iwatani, an otaku, bears the curse of being the "Shield Hero." Armed solely with a meager shield, Naofumi faces scorn and ridicule from his fellow heroes and the kingdom's people due to his weak offensive abilities and lackluster personality.

While the other heroes benefit from resources and comrades for training, Naofumi sets out with the only person willing to accompany him, Malty Melromarc. However, he is soon betrayed by her and falsely accused of taking advantage. Consequently, Naofumi faces severe discrimination and hatred from the people of Melromarc for a crime he did not commit.

Amidst a storm of pain and distrust in his heart, Naofumi embarks on a journey to fortify himself and restore his tarnished reputation. Later, confronted with the challenge of loneliness, Naofumi acquires a near-death demi-human slave named Raphtalia to join him on his travels. As the waves approach the kingdom, Naofumi and Raphtalia must strive to ensure the realm's survival and protect the people of Melromarc from an ominous future.
